Svend Egil Benjamin Olsen (born October 17, 1908 in Lodberg, Thisted, Nordjylland, Denmark; † December 13, 1980 in Hundested, Halsnaes, Hovestaden, Denmark) was a Danish weightlifter . He won one at the Olympic Games 1932 in Los Angeles silver medal in the light heavyweight division .

Career

The weightlifter Svend Olsen was a member of the Idratsklubben af ​​1899 Copenhagen. He was a blond, medium-sized, somewhat stocky athlete who was equipped with excellent technology. This was particularly evident in his performance in tearing and pushing.

In 1929 he first drew attention to himself when he was the Danish middleweight champion with a performance of 462.5 kg in pentathlon (one-armed snatch, one-armed thrusting, two-armed tearing, two-armed pushing and two-armed pushing) . He achieved u. a. with two-armed snatching 95 kg and with two-armed pushing 125 kg. Both achievements with which he already belonged to the extended world elite at that time.

In 1931 Svend Olsen won the light heavyweight championship in Luxembourg with 342.5 kg (97.5-105-140) in the Olympic three-way fight (two-armed pushing, tearing and pushing) behind the Egyptian Hussein Moukhtar , 357.5 kg (100-112 , 5-145) and the Luxemburgish Nikolaus Scheitler , 350 kg (102.5-110-137.5) the bronze medal.

In the spring of 1932 Svend Olsen achieved two new world records in Copenhagen with 119 kg in two-armed snatching and 155 kg in two-armed pushing in the light heavyweight division. His performance of 372.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight meant an unofficial world record. At that time world records were only held in the respective individual disciplines. Because of these achievements, he was the real favorite at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He did not disappoint there either and achieved 360 kg (102.5-107.5-150) in the Olympic three-way battle (OD), but had to face the experienced Frenchman Louis Hostin , who weighed 365 kg (102.5-112.5-150 ) came, just give up. He won the Olympic silver medal with it.

Svend Olsen ended his career as a weightlifter in 1933 and appeared as a professional strength athlete in circuses.
