Sylt-Ost (Danish: Sild Øst ) was a municipality on the island of Sylt in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein , which existed from 1970 to 2008. The seat of the community was Keitum . The full-time administered municipality was the administrative seat of the Sylt Landscape Office and carried out the administrative business for it.

history

The community was formed on December 31, 1969 from the previously independent communities Archsum , Keitum , Morsum and Tinnum . These former municipalities and the place Munkmarsch (formerly Keitum municipality) formed the five districts of the municipality. According to the main statute, these were called " Seebad ". Local councils were elected in the districts.

In a referendum in May 2008, the merger of the municipality of Sylt-Ost with the city of Westerland was decided on January 1st, 2009. This merger was later joined by the previously independent municipality of Rantum . Since January 1, 2009 these previous communities and the city of Westerland have been connected to the new community of Sylt (on Sylt).

politics

Of the last 19 seats in the municipal council, the electoral community SWG had eight seats after the (last) local elections in 2008, the CDU six, the SPD three and the SSW two seats.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Divided by gold and blue lowered. At the top of the dividing line a bright red sun, above - rising towards the center - five eight-pointed blue stars, below a silver herring swimming to the left. "

The five stars of the coat of arms, approved in 2002 and designed by an artist from Sylt, stand for the five villages in the municipality at the time. The herring is supposed to represent the former connection of the communities to the herring fishing and was already used as a seal of the Sylt bailiwick in the 17th century. The colors are the old Frisian colors, which are also reflected in the traditional costumes.

economy

The most important branch of the economy in the former municipality was tourism , on which almost all businesses were directly or indirectly dependent. Agriculture , on the other hand, played a subordinate role in the end, which was the dominant source of income for the population until the middle of the 20th century, before the advent of tourism in the villages.

traffic

The community was on the march track .
