Synagogue in Mommenheim

The synagogue of Mommenheim , a French community in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region , is a former Jewish place of worship that is now used as a sports and cultural center.

history

A Jewish community had existed in Mommenheim since the 17th century and had over 270 members at its wedding in the 19th century. The first synagogue was built in 1775 and replaced by a new building in 1869 after several renovations. The building still standing today was erected in 1904. During the German occupation of France in World War II , the Mommenheim Jews were first deported to southern France and later to the extermination camps in Eastern Europe. The synagogue was set on fire in 1940 and badly damaged. After 1945 some of the surviving Jews returned to Mommenheim. The synagogue was restored in 1957 and served the severely decimated community (approx. 25 people) as a prayer room for several years.

In March 2019, the building was smeared with swastikas.
