The pottery birds (Furnariidae) are a species-rich family in the order of the passerine birds (Passeriformes). The family comprises 222 species in 56 genera.

The distribution area extends from Mexico to South America . Pottery birds inhabit different biotopes . The plumage is usually rust-brown, brown or gray.

Nest building

They got their name because of the way the nests of some species are built. These are created on an elevated vantage point. Bit by bit, moist clay is dragged in over a period of around two weeks. Three walls are built on a pedestal, ending up in a closed roof. The entrance to the brood chamber is on the side. The outer walls are reinforced with blades of grass and the brood chamber is padded with grass. When finished, a nest can weigh up to five kilograms.
