The Tango Desktop Project is a freedesktop.org project that aims to provide users with a more uniform graphical user interface . It provides developers with a single icon theme available, as the different configuration of the desktop environments of Microsoft Windows XP , macOS , KDE and Gnome makes it difficult developers, programs to integrate visually. Programs that use icons that follow the Tango style should fit in well on the outside despite the different surfaces.

aims

Among other things, the project defines a strict standard for the design of icons. This includes a fixed color palette as well as prescribed frame widths and perspectives. The icons themselves do not aim to stand out from the icon sets of other systems, but rather to be as unique as possible within the framework of the icon set and thus to be quickly recognizable for the user. The standard now enjoys such a reputation that other manufacturers who have nothing to do with the project or the open source scene are also creating icons that follow the standard so that their applications run under Windows XP, Mac OS X, KDE, GNOME or Xfce doesn't look out of place.

Apart from these so-called "visual guidelines", the aim of the project is to find memorable names for the icons. The Tango project follows the freedesktop.org standard for icon set names ( Standard Icon Theming Specification ) and advances the Freedesktop.org standard for icon naming ( Standard Icon Naming Specification ).

use

The Tango style guidelines are widely accepted in the open source community. In the meantime, popular software such as GIMP , Scribus , Inkscape , the somewhat less well-known ReactOS , and Gnome icons that adhere to this standard are used. From version 3, the Mozilla Firefox browser on Linux also uses the Tango icons.

Even proprietary software, the icons, the desktop project originated as part of the Tango, use. Well-known closed source software of this type are, for example, VMware Workstation 6 and Medsphere OpenVista CIS .

From version 0.8.90 the icons are in the public domain , previous versions were under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license .
