In 1931 a road race was established in Apulia , based on the Targa Florio , the Targa Puglia , which had been driven out since 1906 . The race took place on public roads around the city of Bari and ran over 679,900 km. This first racing event of this name took place in October 1931 and ended with the overall victory of the two Ferrari factory drivers Guglielmo Carraroli and Francesco Severi in an Alfa Romeo 1750c .
