Local history

Teveren used to belong to the Jülich office of Geilenkirchen. The place was first mentioned in the 12th century. The manorial rule of Teveren came to Heinsberg in 1339 . In 1556 the jury was merged with the Geilenkirchen court . The noble lords of Tevern, which died out in the 13th century , probably emerged from the place. Due to its historical affiliation to the Duchy of Jülich , the Teveren coat of arms bears the Jülich lion and the so-called hand of oath .

Teveren had a total of 871 inhabitants in 1828, and 901 in 1852. Teveren was an independent mayor's office and formed a community with Grotenrath and Neu-Teveren. In the course of the territorial reform , the municipality of Teveren was dissolved on January 1, 1972. Legal successor is the city of Geilenkirchen according to Section 29 of the Aachen Act .

In the winter of 1944/45 there was heavy fighting near Geilenkirchen between the Wehrmacht and the western allies GB , USA and Canada . Aachen had capitulated on October 21, 1944 ; then the advance came to a standstill , including on the Siegfried Line, which sometimes consisted of several lines in a row.

At Geilenkirchen there was a "bulge" in the front line ("Geilenkirchen salient"); Geilenkirchen was occupied on November 19th as part of Operation Clipper (part of Operation Queen ). For a short time a front was created on sections of the worm .

In 1953 built and moved into the British Royal Air Force , the Air Base Geilenkirchen . The airfield was taken over in 1968 by the German Air Force , which stationed the Missile Squadron 2, equipped with short-range missiles of the Pershing 1A type . The associated nuclear stockpile was just north of Air Base 50 ° 58 '19 "  N , 6 ° 3' 15"  O . The nuclear warheads for the missile squadron (FKG) 2 stationed in Teveren and later in Niederheid were stored here. In 1980 the missile squadron moved to the Selfkant barracks in Geilenkirchen and NATO moved into Teveren with the AWACS association. It established in 1982 the Air Base Geilenkirchen and stationed there, the NATO - AWACS -Aufklärungsflugzeuge of type Boeing E-3 A Sentry.

Catholic Church History

The parish of St. Willibrord Teveren is made up of the towns of Teveren with Bocket, Neuteveren and partly Panneschopp . The majority of the population consists of Catholics .

In Teveren there was a church in 1533 that was run as a branch of Geilenkirchen. The church patronage lay with the Heinsberger Norbertinerstift, which also owned a court and the tithe in the village . In 1630 the separation from Geilenkirchen and the elevation to the parish was completed.

In the course of the parish reforms in the diocese of Aachen , the formerly independent, Catholic parish of St. Willibrord Teveren was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Bonifatius Geilenkirchen .

Evangelical parish

The Protestant parish of Geilenkirchen-Hünshoven has around 4500 members. The environment is mostly Roman Catholic. But since the late 16th century a self-confident Protestant community has developed in Geilenkirchen (today the district of Heinsberg), which has grown immensely , especially due to the refugees after the Second World War . This growth in the number of parishioners led to the establishment of a second pastorate in 1993 . Since then there have been two pastoral care districts.

The first district comprises the north of the urban area with Bauchem and the villages of Gillrath , Nierstraß , Tripsrath , Niederheid , Hochheid , Süggerath and Prummer .

The second district includes the south of the city of Geilenkirchen with the city center, Hünshoven and the villages of Teveren, Grotenrath , Immendorf , Waurichen and Apweiler .

The centers of community life are the two listed churches with attached community centers in Geilenkirchen and Teveren. In Geilenkirchen there is also the community office, the Zille youth center and the Protestant cemetery . There is also a small Protestant cemetery in Grotenrath.

According to § 3 (1) j) of the main statute of the city of Geilenkirchen, the places Teveren and Bocket form a district. He is represented by a local mayor in the city council of Geilenkirchen. The head of the district is Hans Josef Paulus. Stand 2013
