The Death of Kevin Carter: Casualty of the Bang Bang Club is an American documentary released in 2004.

The film deals with the circumstances surrounding the creation of a photo by the South African photojournalist Kevin Carter (1960–1994). Carter won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 with the photo of a half-starved Sudanese girl who collapsed on the way to the food counter and was watched by a vulture . After Carter was accused of taking the photo out of pure lust for fame, he went to work in Thokoza township with his colleague Ken Oosterbroek . Disturbed by the reactions to his photo from Sudan and depressed by the shooting of his colleague on April 18, 1994, Carter committed suicide on July 27, 1994.

Awards

In 2006 the film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category. There were also two nominations for the News and Documentary Emmy Award for Best Documentation and Best Information Program.

The film won the IDA Award from the International Documentary Association , the Cleveland International Film Festival , the LA Shorts Fest , the Tribeca Film Festival , a gold medal at the Student Academy Awards and the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival .
