The Watch - neighbors of the third kind (original title: The Watch ) is a US action - comedy from the year 2012 with Ben Stiller , Vince Vaughn , Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade in the lead roles. Akiva Schaffer, known from the comedy trio The Lonely Island, directed . The film follows Evan (Stiller), Bob (Vaughn), Franklin (Hill) and Jamarcus (Ayoade), a group of citizens who are starting a neighborhood watch. When the four suddenly discover aliens in their own city who are threatening the world, they have to act quickly. The film was released in US cinemas on July 25, 2012 and in German cinemas on September 6, 2012.

action

Evan Trautwig is an active citizen and branch manager of the local Costco store in his hometown of Glenview, Ohio . When the night watchman of the Costco is murdered and skinned during his shift and the police find no clues, Evan wants to take matters into his own hands and find the killer. So he founds a neighborhood watch and can win three men for himself: Bob, who is the father of a teenage daughter; Franklin, a high school dropout whose application as a police officer was turned down; and Jamarcus, who recently got divorced and is trying to meet people.

To Evan's annoyance, the other members of the guard see it as more fun at first and get drunk. However, when other citizens perish in a similarly mysterious way, they patrol and finally meet an alien who has just killed citizen Manfred. The alien suggests that the city has already been infiltrated by other aliens and escapes. It occurs to Evan that the aliens take the skin off the killed people and "put it on" themselves in order to be able to live unobtrusively in the city. This inevitably makes every fellow citizen suspicious, and almost every gesture made by another is interpreted as that of an alien. So Evan sees an alien in his new neighbor because he is acting strangely. As they shadow the neighbour's house, Bob receives a message that his daughter Chelsea is at a party with her boyfriend Jason. He goes to the party with Franklin and can just save his daughter from Jason's intrusiveness. Bob tries to confront Jason, but Jason beats him up and disappears. Evan and Jamarcus find out in the meantime that Evan's neighbor is not an alien, but rather has sex orgies in his basement.

Finally, Jamarcus makes a surprising admission: He is an alien himself, but who has decided to switch to the side of humanity after learning about human culture. He warns the others that the aliens are building a transmitter under the Costco market to call their armed forces, which are to exploit and destroy the earth. Jamarcus is expelled from the station for his betrayal. Bob, Franklin, Evan and Evans wife Abby arm themselves and sneak into the Costco Market to destroy the transmitter. Bob meets Jason there, who also turns out to be an alien, and the fight starts again. Meanwhile, Evan and Franklin try to turn off the transmitter, but are surrounded by aliens. Suddenly Jamarcus appears and saves them. He tells them that the aliens' brains are in their genitals. With this information, Bob manages to finish off Jason by ripping off his penis. Evan manages to turn off the transmitter, but this leads to an onslaught of aliens. The group is able to flee and with the help of an alien weapon destroys the entire Costco building with all the aliens in it.

Some time later, Evan, who is sterile , adopted a daughter with Abby. Bob's daughter Chelsea has a new boyfriend who is very impressed that Bob Chelsea’s last boyfriend ripped off his penis. Franklin made his dream come true and became a police officer in Glenview. Jamarcus, who really enjoyed the orgy at Evans' neighbors, continues to attend such events. The group is maintaining the neighborhood watch to continue protecting Glenview.

background

The film was produced by Studio 21 Laps Productions and distributed by 20th Century Fox . The premiere was on July 23, 2012 at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood .

Emergence

Development of the film began in early 2008. Neighborhood Watch was planned as the title . Levy was to develop the project for three years. The original script was written by Jared Stern. In May 2009, David Dobkin and Will Ferrell negotiated the role of director or actor . Dobkin passed on improvements to the script to Stern. However, in August 2009, Dobkin and Ferrell had both left the project. In December 2009, Peter Segal was planned as a possible director, but even so, the film did not have a director until November 2010. That same month, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were hired to completely rewrite the script. In June 2011, the former Saturday Night Live comedian Akiva Schaffer was offered the opportunity to direct. It was his second film, following the 2007 comedy Hot Rod , which he directed. On May 4, 2012, two months before its release, the film was renamed The Watch .

Filming

Filming began in Georgia and partially in Atlanta in October 2011 . It was also filmed in Marietta Square in the city of Marietta , where several stores had to be renamed. One of the scenes filmed in Marietta is a little boy on a skateboard who is kidnapped by aliens. On October 25, 2011, extras were searched to fill the football stadium in Smyrna , Georgia for two evenings on November 2nd and 3rd. On November 23, 2011, a small role in the film was auctioned for $ 23,000 in aid of the Stiller Foundation Charity .

In late November 2011, a former BJ's Wholesale Club in Norcross, Georgia was rebuilt to look like a Costco for filming . On January 23, 2012, Hill announced that filming was officially over.

Reviews

The reviews were mostly negative. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, only 27 of the 159 reviews are positive in their judgment, which corresponds to a rating of 17%. The conclusion of the site says that the film is an "uncomfortable mixture of science fiction elements and disgusting gags". Metacritic gave a Metascore of 36 out of 100 based on 35 reviews.

Cinema.de said about this film: “There are alien comedies that are quite funny. 'Men in Black' for example or 'Mars Attacks!' by Tim Burton. Unfortunately, 'The Watch' is not one of them. The humor is largely made up of slippery nonsense that target below the belt. Okay, with some gags you can't help but grin, but with most of them you just want to run away. While 'The Watch' delivers comparatively childish slapstick on the one hand, it is pretty bloody and violent for a comedy on the other. What works with 'Shaun of the Dead' is rather disturbing here. Most of Ben Stiller's films guarantee high entertainment value, and this is an inglorious exception. "

At Filmstarts.de , Christoph Petersen stated: “'The Watch - Neighbors of the 3rd Kind' offers good-humored stars who don't shy away from any suggestive nonsense - but nobody needs the slimy aliens, instead we'd rather have each other a little more satirical bite desired. "

The lexicon of international films judged: “A moody comedy that strikes a disarmingly relaxed rhythm and gives the comedically savvy actors ample opportunity to confidently pass the humorous balls. It is true that an extraterrestrial super weapon becomes the occasion for a small orgy of destruction, but as a rule self-revealing conversations are held, which also reveal the divided relationship between "ordinary" citizens and sexuality. "

occupation

In June 2011 the roles were negotiated with Vince Vaughn. The character's relationship with his daughter convinced Vaughn to take the role. Hill's involvement in the film was confirmed in August 2011. His role in The Watch forced him to turn down a role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained , which would have been "the next perfect step" for him after his 2011 Oscar nomination. However, he was later able to get a role in the film. Hill had to train his character how to use a butterfly knife for two weeks for his character . Chris Tucker was first considered for the role of Jamarcus , until Ayoade joined.

Also in the supporting roles of the film are Erin Moriarty as Chelsea McAllister, Bob's daughter; Nicholas Braun as Jason, Chelsea's friend; Will Forte as Sergeant Bressman, and Mel Rodriguez as his partner Chucho, Doug Jones as Alien, R. Lee Ermey as Manfred Salisbury, a local citizen; and Joseph A. Nunez as Antonio Guzman, Evans murdered colleague who got him to start the neighborhood watch. Billy Crudup does not appear in the credits as Evan's "strange neighbor" Paul. Director Akiva Schaffer and his colleagues in the comedy troupe The Lonely Island , Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone , make a cameo in the film as members of Paul's sex orgy masturbating.
