Literary template and staff

The title of the novel refers to a story told in it about yellow canaries

The film is based on the novel The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers . The debut novel by the American author and ex-soldier was shortlisted for the National Book Award after its publication in 2012 and was awarded the Guardian First Book Award in the same year . In 2013 the Hemingway Foundation PEN Award followed . Powers incorporated his own experience as a machine gunner during the first phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom into the book, but the story of the two young soldiers themselves is fiction.

The title of the novel refers to a story told in it. On a watchtower, Murph Bartle tells how his father once brought home a dozen canaries that were kept in cages in the tunnels of the mine where he worked. His father wanted to release the birds, and believing they would not return, he considered storing vegetables in the empty cages or hanging them between trees and lighting candles in them.

Jeffrey Sharp and Evan Hayes had acquired the rights to Power's novel and commissioned an adaptation of the script for the film, which was carried out by RFI Porto and David Lowery , who was also originally intended to direct the anti-war drama. Lowery was later replaced by Alexandre Moors . The film is produced by Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon .
