Theophil Spoerri

Theophil Spoerri (born June 10, 1890 in La Chaux-de-Fonds , † December 24, 1974 in Caux ) was a Swiss Romance scholar .

Life

Spoerri came from a Methodist family of preachers and showed strong religious, social and political commitment.

Spoerri received his doctorate in Bern in 1916 on Il dialetto della Valsesia (Milan 1918). From 1912 to 1922 he was a grammar school teacher in Bern, from 1922 to 1956 full professor for Romance philology at the University of Zurich (1932 dean, 1948 to 1950 rector).

From 1942 to 1951 he published the Trivium magazine together with Emil Staiger . Swiss quarterly for literary studies and style criticism .

Spoerri was an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva (1950) and holder of the Golden Dante Medal (Florence 1962). In 1940 he was a co-founder and first president of the anti-Nazi Gotthard League and belonged to the New Helvetic Society and the Moral Armament ( Oxford Group ).

Spoerri had a cousin of the same name, the Methodist theologian Theophil Spörri (1887–1955). He was the uncle and adoptive father of Daniel Spoerri .
