Thomas Grether (born November 14, 1965 in East Berlin ) is a former German soccer player .

Athletic career

Club career

Thomas Grether comes from the youth division of the FC Dynamo in Berlin , where he started playing football in 1973. In the fall of 1983, the midfielder, under coach Jürgen Bogs, made the leap into the league team of the later GDR record champions. He made his debut in the top division of GDR football on the 10th matchday of the 1983/84 season in the 4-0 home win of the champions against East Berlin local rivals 1. FC Union. In the following years, Grether rarely got beyond the role of a supplementary player in the Oberliaelf - Grether had most of the season's appearances (15) in his first year - and was often called up in the second-rate league at BFC Dynamo II.

By the end of 1988 he played a total of 52 league appearances (5 goals) for the first team of the BFC. In addition to winning five GDR championships and winning the FDGB Cup in 1987/88 , Grether also made a total of six appearances in the European Cup against Austria Wien , AS Roma and FC Aberdeen .

During the winter break of the 1988/89 season, the 1.73 meter tall Grether moved to local rivals 1. FC Union Berlin and had to take the bitter step into the second division with the Iron . After the failure of the Köpenicker in the qualifying round for the 2nd Bundesliga in the spring of 1991, he was hired by the second division BSV Stahl Brandenburg and VfL Osnabrück . From 1993 Grether let his career end in Berlin. Until 2001 he was still active with the Reinickendorfer Füchsen , the Köpenicker SC and Lichtenberg 47 .

Selection bets

With the GDR junior selection, he qualified in 1984 for the IV U-18 European Championship in the Soviet Union . There the BFC footballer, who was still in the attack at the time, was used in the preliminary round in the last of the three group games against the USSR (0: 1).

For the U-21 European Championship in 1986 he was part of the GDR youth team . The team coached by Horst Brunzlow lost only one of their six games in Group 4, but four draws cost them a place in the final round.
