The GDR Oberliga 1983/84 was the 35th edition of the top division of the GDR . It began on August 13, 1983 and ended on May 19, 1984. The Berlin FC Dynamo again prevailed over the competition and celebrated its sixth championship in a row.
Season course
Defending champion FC Dynamo from Berlin had to fight more resistance this season. Up to the 9th matchday there were five different leaders. On matchday ten, the BFC took first place for the second time. The pursuers Dynamo Dresden and Lokomotive Leipzig were always within reach. During the winter break, the BFC led (19 points), ahead of Dynamo Dresden (18 points) and Lok Leipzig (17 points).
The second half of the season was just as exciting: Dynamo Dresden took over the championship lead on matchday 19 after the 5-1 win over Rot-Weiß Erfurt due to the better goal difference, but had to take it a week later after the goalless 0-0 at the relegation-threatened Hallescher FC Chemie at the BFC submit. Three game days before the end of the season there was the summit first against second. The BFC was able to prevail against Dynamo Dresden with 4: 2 and thus ensure a preliminary decision. On the penultimate matchday, the Berliners had three points ahead and could afford a 0-2 home defeat on the last matchday. With the sixth championship title, the BFC drew level with Dynamo Dresden and FC Vorwärts Berlin as record champions.
It was no less exciting at the bottom of the table. The Chemnitzer FC chemistry was beaten until the penultimate round. The second relegated team was decided in two play- offs between 1. FC Union Berlin and BSG Chemie Leipzig with the same point and goal .
