The GDR Oberliga 1954/55 was the sixth edition of the top division of the GDR . The championship went to SC Turbine Erfurt , which defended its championship title from the previous year. The season began on September 5, 1954 and ended on April 24, 1955.
Before the season
For the first time since its inaugural season, the league had its original size of 14 teams, after the three relegated teams were only followed by two promoted teams in the previous season. The number of top division participants shouldn't change after that.
The year 1954 also brought profound changes for GDR football. For the targeted development of high- performance sport, so-called sports clubs (SC) were founded in the districts , whose sections functioned as a performance base for various types of sport. In football, a large number of the upper league teams - which previously operated almost exclusively as company sports associations (BSG) - were integrated into the sports clubs as football sections.
As a result, entire teams were relocated in some cases. In November 1954 , the teams from Empor Lauter and Dynamo Dresden were relocated to Rostock and Berlin , respectively , and connected to the newly founded sports clubs Empor Rostock and Dynamo Berlin . The relocation of the Empor team was primarily due to geographical reasons, as the north of the GDR was clearly underrepresented in the upper league, while four communities from the Karl-Marx-Stadt district alone played top-class. Another planned relocation of the team from BSG Wismut Aue to the sports club of the same name in Karl-Marx-Stadt failed due to the protest of the population, which culminated in strike threats from the Wismut miners. Thus, the newly formed soccer section of SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt continued to be based in Aue.
As part of the state-sponsored district performance centers, the sports clubs were entrusted with the training of the most talented and capable athletes in their catchment areas. While the top-performing players were to be concentrated in the football sections in the future, the company sports associations usually had to hand over their most promising talents to the sports clubs - usually when they were young. As in other team sports, a two-tier society emerged in league football, which was increasingly to be shaped by the dominance of the SC teams. The teams from ten sports clubs and four company sports associations played for the 1954/55 championship.
Sports club formation
In the course of the formation of the sports club between September and November 1954, several company sports associations appeared in the league under new names during the season. The transition from BSG Chemie Leipzig to SC Lokomotive took place shortly before the start of the season (on September 1st).

Season course
The course of the season was significantly influenced by the restructuring. Dynamo Dresden was the leader of the table for a long time, but was unable to maintain its performance after the delegation to Berlin and, as the third-worst team in the second half of the season, ended the season in seventh place. The move also had a negative impact on Empor Lauter. Until the move after the eighth match day, the team was in third place, after which it slipped to ninth place. To make matters worse, some players switched to other teams from the Ore Mountains. Turbine Erfurt and Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt offered the most consistent performances, both of which consequently took the first two places. Turbine was the first team to defend its soccer championship title in the GDR.
For last year's runner-up, Chemie Leipzig, the season was disappointing and they only ended up in eleventh place. Things went even worse for the master of 1952, Turbine Halle, who had meanwhile been connected to SC Chemie Halle-Leuna. Halle and Meerane were relegated from the league. For Meerane it was the last season in the league.

Promotion lap
Since the GDR league was divided into three instead of two seasons this season, the three season winners had to play the two promotion places in a promotion round. The previous year's relegated team and founding members of the upper league, Lokomotive Stendal and Motor Dessau, as well as progress Weissenfels, a team that had never played in the upper league, qualified for this. There was a double round with two legs.
