The GDR Oberliga 1973/74 was the 25th edition of the top division of the GDR . 1. FC Magdeburg became champions for the second time . The season began on August 18, 1973 and ended on April 6, 1974. Subsequently, all upper division clubs competed again within the DFV-Toto special round .
Before the season
With the rise of BSG Energie Cottbus , the district of Cottbus was represented in the league again for the first time since the relegation of SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg in 1963. In a way, Cottbus' rise meant a return of activists, as the sports club had been integrated into SC Cottbus at the beginning of the 1963/64 season , from which BSG Energie Cottbus was spun off in 1966.
Season course
The same teams landed on the medal ranks as in the previous year, but Dresden and Magdeburg swapped places, with which 1. FC Magdeburg won its second championship. Jena was again only the runner-up. The championship was characterized by the three-way battle between these teams, who were separated by only one point until matchday 24. A preliminary decision was the direct duels between Magdeburg and Jena (24th matchday) and Dresden (25th matchday), both of which were won away from the Magdeburg team. For Jena, the 1: 2 against Magdeburg was the first home defeat since the 1968/1969 season. With a final 3-2 at home against fourth-placed forward Frankfurt, Magdeburg secured the championship title. For FC Vorwärts, fourth place was the best position since moving to Frankfurt (Oder).
The strength of the newcomer Energie Cottbus turned out to be insufficient and with only one win of the season, the team was relegated immediately. In the end, Cottbusern lacked nine points for the next non-relegation place. Chemistry Leipzig, who had been promoted from the previous year, also failed to stay up. After a 0: 1 home defeat against direct rivals Rot-Weiß Erfurt on the penultimate match day, the second relegation in the history of Leutzscher was certain.

International competitions
The 1973/74 European Cup season brought GDR football the greatest success of all time in international club football. 1. FC Magdeburg made it to the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup , where they faced defending champions AC Milan . Magdeburg won the cup with a 2-0 win. But the GDR participants were also able to impress in the other competitions. Dynamo Dresden defeated Juventus Turin in the first round of the European Champions Cup (2: 0 in the first leg and 2: 3 in the second leg) and was only marginally eliminated against the eventual cup winners FC Bayern Munich (3: 4 and 3 : 3). In the UEFA Cup there was also a duel between the GDR and Italy. And here, too, the East German representative remained the winner, because Lokomotive Leipzig prevailed against AC Turin in the first round . In the further course of the competition Leipzig defeated other well-known opponents (one after the other Wolverhampton Wanderers , Fortuna Düsseldorf and Ipswich Town ) before they were eliminated in the semifinals against Tottenham Hotspur . The second GDR participant Carl Zeiss Jena had less success and was eliminated in the second round against Ruch Chorzów . The GDR again decided not to take part in the 1973 Intertoto Cup .
