Thomas Kretschmann (born September 8, 1962 in Dessau ) is a German actor and former swimmer .

Life

Thomas Kretschmann was born the son of a teacher who raised him alone. In his youth he was a talented swimmer . At the age of six he started swimming in the Dessau city pool and at the age of ten he went to a sports boarding school in Halle (Saale) . A year later he swam the GDR age class record over 1500 meters freestyle , from then on he belonged to the GDR Olympic squad and won several championship titles. At the age of 17 he gave up competitive sports and later finished his school career with a high school diploma. He got to know the actor Dirk Nawrocki and his partner, the set designer and painter Heiko Zolchow, who inspired him to apply to the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin . Despite passing the entrance exam, he never took up his university place because he decided to flee to West Germany.

In September 1983 he fled to the Federal Republic of Germany via Hungary, Yugoslavia and Austria .

At the end of the 1980s, he completed an acting training at the drama school "Der Kreis" in Berlin. He then played a role in Macbeth , directed by Katharina Thalbach . He made his film debut in 1989 in the film Der Mitwisser . In 1991 he was honored as the best young actor for this film at the Max Ophüls Film Festival .

In 1993 he played in his first German movie. Joseph Vilsmaier cast him for a leading role in his war drama Stalingrad .

In the cinema, Kretschmann can be seen in supporting roles in major Hollywood productions. In 2002, among others, in Blade II with Wesley Snipes and the Oscar- winning film Der Pianist by Roman Polański , in which he embodies the German officer Wilm Hosenfeld . In 2004 he could be seen in Resident Evil: Apocalypse and especially in Oliver Hirschbiegel's The Downfall . In 2005 Kretschmann got a supporting role in the remake King Kong by Peter Jackson . Here he met his fellow actor Adrien Brody from The Pianist .

In the TV movie, don't be afraid! - The life of Pope John Paul II embodied Kretschmann Johannes Paul II. In 2003 he played a supporting role in two episodes of the second season of the television series 24 .

On March 9, 2006, the horror film Rohtenburg (Butterfly, a Grimm Love Story) should have started in the cinemas, in which Kretschmann plays the cannibal Oliver Hartwin. This figure is freely based on the figure of Armin Meiwes , who became known as the “Cannibal von Rotenburg” . Meiwes saw his personal rights violated by the film and applied to the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court for an injunction against the showing of the film. This was issued on March 3, 2006 and confirmed on June 17, 2008. However, the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) overturned this decision with its decision of May 26, 2009.

In 2007, Kretschmann prepared for the role of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg , which he was to play in the German-US film production Operation Walküre - Das Stauffenberg Assassination . Shortly before the signing of the contract for the drama, which takes on the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler in 1944 , the leading role was cast with the American Tom Cruise . Kretschmann then took over the role of Major Otto Ernst Remer .

Also in 2007, Kretschmann was in a supporting role in the action film Next of Lee Tamahori to see. In 2008 he played the title role of Wolf Larsen in the new ProSieben adaptation of Der Seewolf . In the same year he appeared alongside Angelina Jolie , Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy in the action film Wanted . In 2010 he stood in the jungles of Malaysia for the film adaptation of Sabine Kuegler's bestseller Dschungelkind , which was released in theaters in 2011. Until April 2011, Kretschmann was part of Johnnie Walker's Walk-With-Giants campaign , where he talked about his human career.

On November 2nd and 3rd, 2011 Thomas Kretschmann was seen in the ARD two-part Laconia as Admiral Karl Dönitz at the side of Franka Potente . The two were already in front of the camera in the feature film Eichmann . In 2012 he embodied Dracula in Dario Argento's Dracula 3D . For the horror series Dracula , co-produced by NBC and BBC , he played the role of Abraham Van Helsing from 2013 to 2014 , while Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be seen as Count Dracula and Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Jonathan Harker . In 2014 he played Horst Dassler in the film United Passions . In the same year he was seen at the end of the film The Return of the First Avenger as Baron Wolfgang von Strucker . He also appeared in the same role a year later at the beginning of the follow-up film Avengers: Age of Ultron .

In 2003 Thomas Kretschmann was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy .

Private

Kretschmann was in a relationship with Lena Roklin for twelve years and has three children with her (* 1998, * 1999 and * 2002). At the end of March 2009, both announced the separation. After that, Kretschmann was in a relationship with the German-Iranian photo model Shermine Shahrivar from March 2009 to June 2010 .
