After his brother Wolfgang Schäuble resigned from the parliamentary group and party chairmanship of the CDU on February 16, 2000 as a result of the CDU donation affair , Thomas Schäuble publicly criticized Helmut Kohl sharply . He accused him of having severely hindered the renewal of the party by persevering in office and spoke out in favor of taking legal action against Kohl, "even if that is not that easy given the state of the party". Literally he meant: "I detest Mr. Kohl, and I can speak for the whole family."
