Life

Growing up in a musical family, his mother played the piano and his father sang the baritone, Tim Cross received classical piano lessons from an early age. He dealt mainly with Mozart and Bach and only came into contact with popular music after he was 14 years old. That was initially the Beatles , later Genesis , Pink Floyd , Yes and Frank Zappa . After studying at Dartington College in Devon , where he studied harpsichord and composition , he began his musical career in the advertising industry. First as librarian for mood music, editor and finally as composer for jingles in a studio in London's West End. After two years he went into business for himself, wrote and continued to record industrial music.

In the spring of 1979 he met Mike Oldfield, with whom he toured for the next four years. The contact to TV Smith and Gaye Advert was established through Tom Newman , who had produced Tubular Bells and who needed keyboard sounds for the Adverts Cast of Thousands second album . Although Cross wasn't very interested in punk music, he joined the band as a keyboardist. Neither his musical training nor his outward appearance matched a punk band, but friendship and sympathy with the musicians had priority. He enjoyed working the Adverts at the same time as Mike Oldfield and the completely different punk band. Even after the Adverts had dissolved in October 1979, Tim Cross worked again and again with TV Smith, played keyboards on "TV Smith Explorers" and "Cheap", and partly as a co-producer on Smith's solo projects and supported him as a keyboardist and percussion musician .

In 1985, Cross released the album Classical Landscape with classical arrangements. He continued to work in the advertising industry and produced numerous jingles for television, cinema and radio. From 2003 to 2005 he recorded four albums of Indian music with Dana Gillespie and was involved in sessions with Sally Oldfield , The Skids , Doll by Doll and Red Box . He had a guest appearance with the Toten Hosen on the albums Away Game and Back to Luck . Cross also supported the Spanish punk band Suzy & Los Quattro on their albums Stick with It in 2008 and Hank in 2011.

Tim Cross died on July 9, 2012 of complications from lung cancer.
