Tim Hetherington (born December 5, 1970 in Birkenhead , † April 20, 2011 in Misrata , Libya ) was a British photojournalist , war correspondent and documentary filmmaker . In New York he worked as a photographer for Vanity Fair magazine, among other things .

Life

After studying literature at Oxford , he studied photojournalism there. With his work he repeatedly pointed out the consequences of war, poverty and globalization . For example, he accompanied US soldiers during their deployment in the Iraq war , took pictures of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia , as well as street photographs from Manhattan or of people in Africa .

In addition to being a photographer, Tim Hetherington also worked as a film producer and cameraman . Noteworthy is his 2004 film about the Civil War in Liberia , Liberia: an Uncivil War . In January 2010, his new film Restrepo was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City , Utah . It is a documentary about the soldiers of a military unit in the Korengal Valley in eastern Afghanistan . The film, produced in collaboration with Sebastian Junger , was awarded the Jury's Grand Prize for best documentary and received an Oscar nomination in 2011 . Hetherington was engaged to the American filmmaker and producer Idil Ibrahim. They had planned their wedding for 2011.

Hetherington was in the civil war in Libya during a street fight in Misrata in April 2011 American US together with the photojournalist Chris Hondros by a grenade basement of gaddafitreuen killed troops. Shortly before his death, he posted the following tweet on Twitter :

“In defeated Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO. "

“In the besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Ruthless shell fire by Gaddafi's armed forces. Nothing to see from NATO. "

The photo agency Magnum Photos published his last pictures. In June 2011, Hetherington became the first person to be posthumously appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
