Career
After winning the summer championship on the normal hill in 2004, Hilde celebrated her first significant successes in the junior jumping competitions as part of the Norges Cup in the 2004/05 season . During the season he won four competitions. In spring 2005 he was second on the large hill and fourth on the normal hill at the Norwegian junior championship. With the Norwegian team he reached sixth place at the Junior World Championships in Rovaniemi, Finland , while he was 21st in the individual. The following year, Hilde moved up to the men's team. He won a competition in the Norges Cup in Vegårshei and was sixth at the Norwegian championship on the normal hill. Finally, on March 10, 2006, he made his World Cup debut in Lillehammer and immediately reached 19th place.
Since the 2006/07 season he was part of the national team of Norwegian ski jumpers. This was determined by the Finnish national coach Mika Kojonkoski in an elimination competition. He said literally, “We find the time is right for new energy and fresh blood. We think that Tom and Anders represent exactly that. That’s why they’re in the senior national team. ”Tom Hilde was already considered by the Norwegian daily newspapers to be the biggest young talent in the ski jumping circuit. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo , Hilde won the silver medal in the team competition on the large hill together with Anders Bardal , Anders Jacobsen and Roar Ljøkelsøy . In the individual he was twelfth on the large hill and 21st on the normal hill.
In September 2007 he moved from Asker to Lillehammer to save himself the long journey to training. At the start of the 2007/08 season , he took third place at the World Cup competition in Kuusamo and, with the team, even took first place ahead of Austria . He continued the season successfully, achieved a total of eight podium places, and celebrated his first two World Cup victories on January 12 and 13, 2008 in Val di Fiemme . In February 2008 he won bronze at the Ski Flying World Championships in Oberstdorf in a team with Bjørn Einar Romøren , Anders Bardal and Anders Jacobsen , while he was eleventh in the individual. On March 9, 2008 he was second in the overall ranking of the Nordic Tournament . At the ski flying in Planica on March 15, 2008, he and his team secured first place. He finished the season with fourth place in the overall World Cup. He is also the youngest Norwegian ski jumper of all time to win a World Cup. At the Norwegian Championships in Trondheim on March 30, 2008, he won 11th place on the normal hill and gold with the “Askerhus Skikrets” team ( Henning Stensrud , Bjørn Einar Romøren and Kim Rene Elverum Sorsell).
At the 2009 World Ski Championships in Liberec , Czech Republic , he again won the silver medal in the team competition on the large hill together with Anders Bardal , Johan Remen Evensen and Anders Jacobsen . In the individual competitions he was 16th on the normal and 23rd on the large hill.
At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver he reached 12th place in jumping on the normal hill together with the Czech Roman Koudelka , while he was eleventh on the large hill. With his teammates Anders Bardal , Johan Remen Evensen and Anders Jacobsen , he won the bronze medal in the team competition. At the ski flying world championships of the same year in Planica, Slovenia, he was 29th in the individual.
At the 2011 World Ski Championships in Oslo , he won the silver medal in team competitions on both the large hill (together with Anders Jacobsen , Johan Remen Evensen and Anders Bardal ) and the normal hill (with Jacobsen, Bardal and Bjørn Einar Romøren ). In the individual competitions he was fifth on the normal and tenth on the large hill.
At the start of the Four Hills Tournament 2011/12 in Oberstdorf, Hilde fell. In the process, he broke a vertebra and suffered facial injuries. After the fall, he said: “Ski jumping needs falls. It has to be dangerous to keep people doing it. They watch ski jumping because it's fun and a bit dangerous - that's how it should stay ”. After a break of just two months, he made his comeback in ski flying in Oberstdorf on February 17, 2012.
At the 2013 World Ski Championships in Predazzo , Italy , he finished fourth in team competitions with both the men's team on the large hill and with the mixed team on the normal hill. In the individual competitions he was tenth on the normal and 14th on the large hill. In June 2013, Hilde had an ankle operation because he felt severe pain.
In the following years he was unable to build on his previous achievements and at times started in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup , whose winter classification he won in the 2015/16 season (he finished fourth in the overall classification of summer and winter).
At the beginning of March 2018, Hilde announced that he would end his career at the Raw Air competition in Lillehammer .
