Tom Sandberg (born August 6, 1955 in Mo i Rana ) is a former Norwegian combined and Olympic champion.

Career

Sandberg won the bronze medal in the individual Nordic combined at the Norwegian Championships in Meldal in 1974 behind Pål Schjetne and Arne Bystøl . In the same year he won the combination competition on Holmenkollen for the first time.

At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Autrans in 1974 , he won the silver medal in the individual competition behind Konrad Winkler . A year later at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Lieto in 1975 , he finally won the gold medal. In the same year he won the Norwegian Championships in Rælingen , he also won his first national title. Five more Norwegian championship titles followed in a row by 1980.

At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , he finished eighth in the individual combination. Four years later at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , he improved significantly and just barely missed a medal in fourth.

At the 1982 World Cup in Oslo , he won an exciting final sprint with just 0.2 seconds ahead of Konrad Winkler . On January 7, 1984, he made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Schonach in the Black Forest . As 15th he managed to win one World Cup point in his first World Cup. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo , held a few weeks later , he won gold in the individual discipline.

At his first World Cup after the Games, he finished second in Falun , making his first podium. He just missed the repetition of this success as fourth in Lahti . In Oslo , however, he was back on the podium before winning team gold at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Rovaniemi in 1984 together with Geir Andersen and Hallstein Bøgseth .

After winning his last World Cup in Štrbské Pleso on March 24, 1984, he finished the 1983/84 season as the first in the overall World Cup standings. Despite this success, he did not appear in the World Cup in the following season.

Private

Sandberg is the son of Jens Ole Sandberg and Ester Marie Krokstrand. In 1981 he married Ragnhild Monsen. After the end of his active career, Sandberg worked as a physical education teacher.
