Magnus Hovdal Moan (born August 26, 1983 in Lillehammer ) is a former Norwegian Nordic combined skier . He was once Olympic and world champion with the team and with 25 individual World Cup victories is one of the most successful athletes in his sport.

Career

Moan made his international debut in December 2001 in the Nordic Combined B World Cup. He clearly missed the points in Mobakken . In January Moan started at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2002 in Schonach in the Black Forest . After finishing 25th in the individual, he and the team won the bronze medal in the team mass start. In December 2002 the Norwegian won his first two podium places in the B World Cup with a second and a third place in Steamboat Springs .

On January 1st, 2003 Moan made his debut in the Nordic Combined World Cup in Oberhof . But he missed the World Cup points there as well as in Ramsau am Dachstein and in Chaux-Neuve . At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå , he won the silver medal with the team, but missed the medal ranks in the individual disciplines as fifth in the Gundersen race and 14th in the sprint. Back in the B World Cup, he won the individual race in Trondheim and the team competition in Stryn with the team .

For the 2003/04 season Moan started again in the A-squad and already landed in the points at the season opener in Kuusamo . In Trondheim he surprised the competition with fifth place. On January 2, 2004, he achieved his first World Cup victory in Reit im Winkl . For the time being it was his only victory. At the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf , Moan demonstrated his strength for the first time in a major tournament. After a good fourth place in the individual competition, he won the gold medal with the team. He secured another medal with second place in the sprint. At the end of the season he won his second World Cup in Oslo . He secured another victory for the 2005/06 season in Ramsau am Dachstein . He was also on the podium in third place in Oberhof and Schonach.

At his first Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006 , he won bronze in the individual and silver in the sprint behind the German Georg Hettich and the Austrian Felix Gottwald . He did not start in the team competition. Back in the World Cup, he safely won the race in Lahti . He finished the season in second place in the overall World Cup standings. Moan also made a successful start at the Summer Grand Prix in 2006 and, after finishing third in Bischofshofen, won the team competition in Berchtesgaden . In the 2006/07 season Moan started successfully. He won the World Cup in Lillehammer and a little later also the Hurricane Sprint in Ramsau am Dachstein.

At the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo , Moan won the bronze medal in the team competition after silver in the sprint, while he was tenth in the Gundersen competition. After further mixed results until the end of the season, he finished the World Cup winter in third place in the overall World Cup standings. In the following year he could not build on this success and came after mixed individual results at the end of the 2007/08 season only ninth overall.

For the 2008/09 season , Moan quickly made it back to the top of the world. He won in Trondheim, Oberhof, in Val di Fiemme, as well as in Whistler and Chaux-Neuve. However, he could not repeat these performances at the 2009 World Championships in Liberec . Only in the team competition was he able to secure a medal with bronze. In the Gundersen competitions he was fifth on the large hill and 17th on the normal hill, while in the mass start race he reached the finish on 28th. In the World Cup he succeeded again in Lahti towards the end of the season, so that he finally achieved second place in the overall World Cup ranking for the second time since 2005/06.

As a result, he again missed a consistency in his good results. In the 2009/10 season he again reached third place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he went without a medal for the first time. With the team he did not get above fifth place in the two Gundersen competitions, he was ninth on the normal and 15th on the large hill. After two wins in Oberwiesenthal and third place in Oberstdorf , Moan finished the 2010 Summer Grand Prix in second place overall.

At the 2011 World Championships in Oslo he won the bronze medal with the Norwegian team in both team competitions and reached 14th place in the Gundersen competition on the normal hill. At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , Moan managed to win an individual World Cup again after almost two years in Lillehammer . He was also successful in Ramsau. In Schonach he won the team world cup with the Norwegian team.

At the 2013 World Championships in Val di Fiemme, he again missed an individual medal. Only in the team competition on the normal hill did he win silver with the team. In the team sprint he was fifth, while in the Gundersen competitions he reached eighth (large hill) and 17 (normal hill). After Moan landed at the top of the world again in the 2013/14 season and, with two exceptions, only achieved top 10 placements, he got a place at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . After finishing fifth on the normal hill, he secured the silver medal in the individual on the large hill. In the team competition he celebrated his first Olympic victory together with Håvard Klemetsen , Magnus Krog and Jørgen Graabak .

At the world championships in Falun he was runner-up with the Norwegian relay team and won the bronze medal in the team sprint, while he was fourth on the large hill and 26th on the normal hill in the Gundersen competitions. He celebrated his last of a total of 25 individual World Cup victories on December 19, 2015 in Ramsau am Dachstein . At the 2017 World Championships , he won the silver medal both with the team and in the team sprint and took 13th place in the Gundersen competition on the large hill. After three moderately successful winters, he announced his retirement from competitive sports and contested his 244th and last World Cup race on March 9, 2019 in Oslo.
