Anthony Steven "Tony" Evers (* 5. November 1951 in Plymouth , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party , and since January 7, 2019 Governor of the State of Wisconsin.

Career

Tony Evers is from Plymouth , Wisconsin, USA . He studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , where he made his bachelor's degree in 1974 and his master's degree in 1978. He successfully completed his doctorate in 1986 and has been a doctor of philosophy ever since . He has also been working as a teacher since 1980. He later served on various school district governing bodies in Wisconsin. In 1993 and 2001, he twice ran unsuccessfully for the post of Superintendent of Public Instruction of Wisconsin . However, after his defeat in 2001, he was appointed deputy head and held that position until 2009 when he ran for another superintendent. This time he was also elected. Although the office is awarded by direct state general election and Evers is a member of the Democrats, the candidates run without party affiliation . Evers was confirmed for a further four years in 2013 and 2017.

In August 2017, Evers announced his intention to run for the Democrats in the 2018 gubernatorial election. In the party's internal area code , Evers, who was considered the favorite, clearly prevailed against several competitors. During the parallel primary for the post of lieutenant governor , the former MP Mandela Barnes was the first African American to be successful, making him his running mate . In his highly polarizing election campaign against the Republican incumbent Scott Walker , the Democrat focused on the issues of education, health and infrastructure. Evers, for example, advocates improving health insurance coverage and would like to invest in the transport infrastructure. Evers also spoke out in favor of lowering income tax for low and middle incomes. In the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018, Evers won 49.6% of the vote over Walker, who received 48.4% and therefore loses his post after two terms in office. Of around 2.7 million votes cast, his lead was just under 31,000. Tony Evers was inducted into his new office on January 7, 2019.

Tony Evers has three grown children with his wife, Kathy. He is also a grandfather of seven.
