Mandela Barnes (* 1. December 1986 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and Vice-Governor of the State of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 2013 to 2017 .

Life

Barnes came from a humble background and attended a public high school in Milwaukee and later graduated from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University . Already in his youth he showed political interest and joined the Democratic Party . There he was involved, among other things, for the mayor of Milwaukee Tom Barrett in his election campaigns and worked for an interfaith forum . In 2012 he ran for political office and was elected as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . There he represented the 11th constituency. In 2014 he was re-elected. In parliament he was a member of the committees for education, economy and economic development of small businesses. He also chaired a working group of African American MPs. As a parliamentarian, he mainly campaigned for criminal law reform and more gun control . In 2016, Barnes failed to run for the Wisconsin Senate.

In January 2018, Barnes declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor . He won the primary for this office in August 2018. This made him the running mate of Tony Evers , who was elected as governor in a parallel primary . In the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 , Evers and Barnes won a narrow victory over Republican incumbents Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch . On January 7, 2019, Barnes was sworn in as deputy governor. He is the first African American in this office.

Mandela Barnes is single and lives in Milwaukee.
