Anatomy of the Palate
Upper jaw: Torus palatineus on the hard palate

The torus palatinus ( Latin : torus "bulge", palatum "palate") is an exostosis (bony longitudinal bulge) along the midline of the hard palate .

prosthetics

The palatine torus can make it more difficult to hold a full denture in the upper jaw , as the surrounding mucous membrane is flexible, but the palatine torus is not. Therefore, the prosthesis can tilt to the right and left over the torus. For this reason, the torus is "relieved" by placing a tin foil about 1 to 2 mm thick on the plaster model over the torus during the manufacture of the prosthesis . This creates a cavity in the final prosthesis. When the chewing pressure is exerted, the surrounding mucous membrane gives way before the prosthesis comes into contact with the torus.

Surgical removal

There is seldom an indication to remove a palatine torus for prosthetic reasons, since relief can be provided by relieving the area. In rare, very pronounced forms, there may be an indication to remove the palatine torus because of impairment in speaking, chewing or for psychological reasons (sensation of foreign bodies, carcinophobia ).

Incidence

The incidence of this non-pathological, benign bone tumor in the population is given as around 30%. The degree of expression of the palatine torus is very variable. In contrast to the torus mandibularis, women are more often affected than men in the torus palatinus .
