history

The Trinidad Express was founded in 1967 by a group of journalists who wanted to counter the British-dominated Trinidad Guardian , which was founded in colonial times, with a purely local daily newspaper. The journalists had previously worked for the Trinidadian office of the Daily Mirror , which closed in 1967. The establishment was financed by Vernon Charles, then owner of Joseph Charles Bottling Works Ltd, and the constitutional lawyer and former member of parliament Tajmool Hosein, who had helped draft Trinidad's constitution in 1962. The first edition appeared on June 6, 1967. Less than two years later, the newspaper was bankrupt, but in February 1969, Ken Gordon installed an experienced restructuring engineer as CEO who saved the Express from closing. In 1970, the Express survived an advertising boycott triggered by the newspaper's stance on the black power movement, which parts of the economy felt too soft. In the 1970s, the Express made significant profits and acquired stakes in other press companies in the Caribbean. Gordon later founded the Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) as a holding for the Express and its holdings. Since 1980 the newspaper has been presenting the Express Individual of the Year Award for individual achievements by people or organizations. From 1990 to 1992, on the initiative of editor Rosemary Stone, at the time the only female fashion journalist in the Caribbean, the Express organized the Color Me Caribbean fashion week , the first in Trinidad. In 1997 an online presence was installed for the newspaper, which in 2016 attracted around 140,000 visitors per month. In August 2015, Express was the only Trinidadian daily newspaper to install a paywall for its online offering, which led to criticism in other media. In 2016, the newspaper lost a lawsuit against the CEO of a state-owned real estate company and had to pay TT $ 550,000 in compensation for defamation in two articles.
