Trinidad Moruga Scorpion

The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is one of the hottest chili - varieties . It belongs to the species Capsicum chinense .

The breeder of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is Wahid Ogeer, who was President of the Practical Agricultural Training Institute of Trinidad and Tobago and the Confederation of Farmers Association of Trinidad and Tobago in the 2010s . Because of its name, the chilli variety is often associated with the village of Moruga in the extreme south of Trinidad, but there are no sources on the location of the first breeding. The grounds of the breeder Ogeer are in Freeport near Chaguanas .

In the final stage, the berry reaches the size of a golf ball. In addition to the spiciness, the pods develop a fruity taste, which results in a combination of sweet and hot. In trials and samples with a selection of several well-known chilli varieties, the Trinidad Scorpion Moruga was identified by the Chile Pepper Institute of New Mexico State University in 2012 as the hottest variety in the world at the time. Their average spiciness is more than 1.2 million units on the Scoville scale , while the fruits from a single plant reach 2 million units - significantly more than the previous record holder Bhut Jolokia . In November 2013 it lost its title as the hottest chilli in the world to the Carolina Reaper breed .
