The Turuchan Pfeifhase ( Ochotona turuchanensis ) is a species of mammal from the family of the Pfeifhasen (Ochotonidae) within the hare-like (Lagomorpha). Their distribution area extends from the southern area of the Yenisei to Lake Baikal and the central area of the Lena in Russia .
features
The Turuchan Pfeifhase is a medium-sized pika with a body length of 15.8 to 19 centimeters.
distribution
The Turuchan Pika is endemic to Russia , where its range extends from the southern area of the Yenisei to Lake Baikal and the central area of the Lena .
Way of life
Very little information is available about the way of life of this pika. The habitat is mainly in rocky areas and the pika lives between stones. The animals are diurnal and avoid activities during the night due to the low Siberian temperatures. Like all pika they are herbivores, although this species feeds less generalistically than some other species.
The breeding season extends from mid-June to the end of August and the females give birth to an average of 3.4 young in one litter. These will be observed from the end of July.
Systematics
The Turuchan Pfeifhase was assigned as an independent species to the Pfeifhasen (genus Ochotona ) and the subgenus Pika , subspecies are not known. Originally, the species was considered a subspecies of the northern pigeon hare ( Ochotona hyperborea ), with which it lives sympatric in a large part of its range . Other authors assigned it to the Altai Pfeifhasen ( O. alpina ). A final clarification of the species status is still pending, more recent data on the molecular biological level consolidate an assignment as an independent species.
Hazard and protection
The species is classified as not endangered (least concern) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its large distribution area. There are currently no known threats to the inventory.
