The underground station Margaretengürtel on the U4 line of the Vienna underground is located in the 5th district of Margareten . It is named after the section of the Viennese belt that is named after the 5th district of Vienna. The station is located in the cut parallel to the Wien River and extends from the center line between Margareten- and Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel to the Wackenroderbrücke between the 5th and 6th district.

history

Steam light rail

The station was built from 1894 by order of the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna for the Lower Vienna Line of the Vienna steam light rail . In their early plans, it sometimes appears under the alternative names Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel , Schlachthausbrücke or Schlachthaus , before it was finally given the name Margarethengürtel, then still spelled with an “h”. The construction of the stop was completed in September 1896 and opened on June 30, 1899.

As a result of the Orthographic Conference of 1901 , the station was renamed Margaretengürtel without an “h”, but it was not implemented until years later. Thus leading Lehmann's general housing indicators it only in December 1913 for the first time without h. Regardless of this, it was also partly written in earlier days Margarethen Gürtel or Margareten Gürtel .

Steam light rail operations on the Lower Wientallinie finally ended on December 8, 1918 due to a lack of coal.

Electric light rail and subway

On September 7, 1925, the stop went back into operation as part of the Viennese electric light rail, which from then on operated here . From October 20, 1925, it was also served above ground by the combined tram and light rail line 18G , which in turn offered direct connections to the stations of the light rail belt line , but had to cease operations in 1945.

In the 1970s, the renovation was carried out to meet the requirements of today's subway operations. Above all, the platform area was redesigned according to the concept of the U-Bahn architects with modern panel systems and the U4 signal color green. On October 27, 1980, the first scheduled train on the U4 reached the Margaretengürtel station. Exits lead through a reception building preserved in the Otto Wagner style to a forecourt between Margareten- and Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel. Here you can change to tram lines 6 in the direction of Zentralfriedhof and 18 in the direction of Schlachthausgasse. Another exit leads to the right Wienzeile or Morizgasse in the 6th district. There is also barrier-free access to the station.

The Bruno Kreisky Park , which was renamed in 2005, and the Mollardgasse vocational school are in the vicinity .
