The Naturkundemuseum underground station (1923–1951 Stettiner Bahnhof ; 1951–1991 Nordbahnhof ; 1991–2009 Zinnowitzer Bahnhof ) is a station on underground line 6 of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in the Berlin-Mitte district . It is located 4.60 meters below Chausseestrasse between the intersection of Invalidenstrasse and the confluence with Zinnowitzer Strasse. At the BVG it is therefore referred to with the abbreviation Zw . Construction based on plans by Heinrich Jennen, Alfred Grenander and Alfred Fehse began in 1913/1914 and continued after the First World War from 1919. The architects designed a train station in white with a central platform , the station signs had a yellow border. After the neighboring long-distance station of the Berlin-Stettiner Eisenbahn (see: Berlin Nordbahnhof ), the new underground station was opened on January 30, 1923 as Stettiner Bahnhof .

From April to July 1945, the underground station was closed due to war damage . In 1951 it was renamed Nordbahnhof , because from 1950 the former Szczecin long-distance train station no longer bore the name of the city of Szczecin , which now belongs to Poland , due to political circumstances . From August 13, 1961 to July 1, 1990, the North Station was a " ghost station " for underground line 6 ; the only stop in East Berlin was Friedrichstrasse station . Since the complete renovation in the 1990s - among other things, the BVG installed an elevator to Invalidenstrasse for barrier-free access and extended the platforms to 110 meters - the station has been a listed building .

From October 3, 1991, the station was named Zinnowitzer Strasse . However, since this itself has hardly any significance, the Berlin Passenger Association IGEB and various politicians suggested in 2007 that the station be renamed Museum für Naturkunde or Natural History Museum after the nearby Museum für Naturkunde . A renaming was announced for December 2008 after a long discussion, but was then postponed. As of December 30, 2008, in anticipation of the renaming , the Berlin company Wall AG made seven advertising spaces available in the subway station, on which the Museum für Naturkunde showed large-format photos of objects from its holdings. When the BVG timetable changed on December 13, 2009, it was renamed the Natural History Museum .

Connection

The underground station is served by the U6 line. There are also transfer options to the tram lines M5, M8, M10 and 12 as well as to the night bus lines N6 and N40 of the BVG .
