The Udawalawe National Park is a national park located on the border between the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Province in southern Sri Lanka . The region was declared a national park on June 30, 1972 in order to offer protection to the animal species that are native to it, such as birds and elephants .
climate
The Udawalawe National Park is located on the border between the so-called wet and dry zones. The mean annual precipitation is 1520 mm, which is mainly caused by the monsoons between May and September. The relatively long dry season is also characteristic of the park . The average temperature is around 29 ° C.
Flora and vegetation
The park consists mainly of open grasslands and forests .
The most widespread tree species are Chloroxylon swietenia , Diospyros ebenum ( Ceylon ebony ), and the tube cassia ( Cassia fistula ). There are also some Terminalia arjuna , Hopea cordifolia , silver hair grass and star bushes ( Grewia tiliaefolia ).
fauna
The area is famous for its large elephant population. Other animal species that live in Udawalawe National Park are water buffalo , wild boar , muntjac , axis deer and mongoose . A small number of leopards ( Sri Lankan leopards ) also live in the park.
