Ugo Silvio Afferni (born January 1, 1871 in Florence , † October 9, 1931 in Livorno ) was a conductor and composer .

Life

career

After basic training in his hometown, Afferni received a travel grant to Germany . He received lessons from Hans von Bülow at the Raff Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main . From there he went to the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig to finish his musical education. He had developed into an excellent pianist who masterfully combined sensitivity and temperament . For years he played the drums in the orchestra of the conservatory, which flourished under Hans Sitt . There he stayed for several years studying, composing and giving concerts. He enjoyed a special reputation as a delicate accompanist on the piano.

From 1891 to 1893 Afferni undertook major concert tours from Leipzig, on which he was very successful as a pianist. He was repeatedly appointed to the court of the Grand Duke of Weimar to take part in soirees and concerts, where he particularly gained the favor of the Grand Duke. Later he appeared before the equally successful before King Albert of Saxony .

In Leipzig he also worked as a répétiteur for the director of the local theater , Max Staegemann , and initially had the intention of embarking on the career of a theater conductor. This changed when, following a call to Annaberg in the Ore Mountains, he took up his first position in 1893 to begin his career as conductor of several choral societies and orchestral concerts . There he deepened his knowledge of the orchestra and its conducting technique and composed a successfully performed comic opera , as well as various songs and pieces of music were composed here by him.

When the Association of Friends of Music in Lübeck, founded in the previous year, wanted to fill the position of Kapellmeister, Afferni sat down with his rehearsal concert, in which his wife also played as a member of the orchestra, on February 27, 1897 against Franz Kessel from Kaiserslautern and Karl Franck from Halle an der Saale through.

In 1900 Afferni was appointed conductor of the Bad Harzburg spa orchestra for the summer months , from May 15 to October 1, as conductor. The trunk of the orchestra there, consisting of 30–34 musicians, was made up of members of the Lübeck Association of Friends of Music and musicians newly engaged every year from abroad. Since the concerts there were very popular, Afferni and his wife organized additional, equally successful chamber music soirs over the course of each summer .

His claim in Lübeck was that: "The best and the best explanations are just good enough because of his elaborated lecture, for the broader strata of the people and for the simple, simple citizen and concert-goer."

In 1905, Afferni was unanimously elected director of the local spa orchestra in Wiesbaden and left Lübeck.

In 1914 he returned to Italy.

family

Afferni had married May Brammer (* 1873 in Great Grimsby ), a violin virtuoso of the highest perfection, in Annaberg in 1895 . She even stood at the podium of the concertmaster in her husband's orchestra . After the marriage, May's appearances decreased significantly. They met in Leipzig in 1893. Later, his wife built a series of chamber music in Lübeck.
