United States Chess Championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The United States Chess Championship ( US Chess Championship for short , German  "Chess Championship of the United States " ) is an annual invitation tournament in which a master is determined among the chess players in the USA . It should not be confused with the United States Open Chess Championship , the USA's open chess championship.

From 1909 to 1936, Frank Marshall was recognized as the best player in the USA, defending his title in competitions against challengers. After he resigned voluntarily, the national champion was determined from 1936 in tournaments organized by the United States Chess Federation . Until 1999, the championship was held as a round-robin tournament with changing numbers of participants. Between 1999 and 2006, the Seattle Chess Foundation (later America's Foundation for Chess ) organized the tournament according to the Swiss system . After their withdrawal, the championship was played in 2007 and 2008 in Stillwater , Oklahoma . Since 2009, the venue has been the Chess Club and Scholastic Center in St. Louis , Missouri .
