Yury Shulman (also: Yuri Shulman , Russian Юрий Маркович Шульман ; (Juri Markowitsch Schulman); born April 29, 1975 in Minsk ) is a Belarusian-American chess player.

career

Yury Shulman grew up in Belarus. His father, Mark Shulman, is the International Grand Master (GMI) in checkers . From the age of six he received regular chess lessons from the trainer Tamara Golovey. At the age of 12 he continued his studies with the international master Albert Kapengut and was then supervised by Grand Master Boris Gelfand . In 1994 Shulman won the Belarusian championship. In the same year he was recognized for his sporting success by the Republic of Belarus and became a member of the Olympic team . In 1995 he won the European Junior Championship in Holon and received the grandmaster title . In 1998 he became a split Belarusian champion. In 1999 Shulman moved to the United States to study at the University of Texas at Dallas. He holds a degree from the State Academy of Sports of Belarus, a bachelor's degree in computer science, and a master's degree from the University of Texas in finance.

Shulman has been one of the leading chess players there since he lived in the United States. In the closed US championship he was shared third in 2004, second in 2006 and shared third in Stillwater , Oklahoma in 2007 , which he qualified for the 2007 World Chess Championship. In May 2008 he won the US championship and in May 2010 was tied for second after a playoff in rapid chess with tournament winner Gata Kamsky .

In 2000 he was a shared winner at the US National Open, a Texan champion and a winner at the Koltanowski Memorial. He was split first at the 2001 World Open and 2002 at the American Open. He qualified for the 2004 Fide World Cup in Tripoli , Libya, but boycotted the event along with a number of other champions. In 2005 he was champion of Illinois and shared winner of the Millennium Chess Festival, which qualified him for the 2005 World Chess Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk . At the World Cup he got through match successes against Vadim Svyagintsev and Alexander Chalifman to the round of 16, where he was eliminated by Alexander Grishchuk . In 2006 he won the 107th US Open Championship in Chicago and was tied for first in the University of Texas tournament. In 2007 he was tied for first in the Chicago Open, whose lightning playoff was won by Vadim Milov . Shulman took part in the World Chess Cup four times ( 2005 , 2007 , 2009 and 2011 ) . He was most successful in 2005 when he defeated two stronger opponents with Vadim Svyagintsev and Alexander Chalifman , before failing in the third round to Alexander Grishchuk . As a coach, he supervised the American women's team in their fourth place at the 2006 Chess Olympiad in Turin. He is married to the Latvian (now US) WIM Viktorija Ni . The two have a son.

In 2001 Shulman was among the top 100 players in the world for the first time.

Chess teacher

Shulman founded the Yury Shulman International Chess School. He and his volunteers understand chess as a means for charitable purposes. In 2006 and 2007 they gave lessons and donated books to Chicago public schools. Shulman donates a portion of his tournament winnings to charitable organizations. To continue his voluntary activities, Shulman officially founded the non-profit organization “GM Shulman Chess without Borders” in May 2007. He lives in Barrington , Illinois and teaches chess in schools there and at home.

National team

Shulman took part in five Chess Olympiads , in 1994 , 1996 and 1998 with Belarus, in 2008 and 2010 with the USA. His greatest success was third place with the team in Dresden in 2008 . He also took part with the United States in the 2010 and 2011 World Team Championships (and finished second with the team in 2010) and with Belarus in the 1997 European Team Championships.

Shulman won the Swedish Elitserien in the 1998/99 season with the Sollentuna SK . In the Czech extra league he played from 1997 to 2000 for TJ Nová Huť Ostrava . In the United States Chess League , he played for the St. Louis Arch Bishops in 2010 and for Chicago Blaze in 2011 .
