The United World College of the Adriatic ( UWCAd ) is the sixth of 18 United World Colleges . The school in the northern Italian coastal village of Duino near Trieste and Monfalcone was founded in 1982 by the Province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia with the support of the Italian government. 190 students from around 90 different countries take the International Baccalaureate Diploma , an internationally recognized university entrance qualification, after two years of schooling .

All students at UWCAd have a scholarship that covers study costs and full board accommodation. They are selected by around 120 national selection committees on the basis of their academic performance, their extracurricular and especially social commitment and their development potential.

Currently, 25% of the students come from developing countries, 25% from Eastern Europe (including two students from Serbia and two from Bosnia and Herzegovina ), 25% from Italy and the remaining 25% from other industrialized countries.

The location of the UWCAd at the intersection of Roman , Germanic and Slavic cultures gives the college a special role in relation to the Eastern and Central European states. Students from Slovenia , Croatia , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Serbia , Montenegro and Macedonia continued their peaceful and harmonious life at the United World College of the Adriatic even during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia .

The school does not have a campus in the traditional sense, but is fully integrated in the village of Duino. The academic buildings and student dormitories are not centralized, but are distributed across the village. The students are integrated into village life. As part of their upbringing, all students regularly take part in social activities and are committed to their environment - be it in cooperation with immigrants, children and local schools, the disabled or older citizens.

The United World College of the Adriatic teaches in English according to the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva. In order to participate in village life, all students also learn Italian. The special respect for the respective cultural background of the students expresses itself among other things. a. in the fact that over 30 languages are offered as mother tongue including teaching of the respective literature. The teachers are recruited internationally and in some cases even sent directly by their respective governments. In addition to the academic program and “social services”, sport, art, music and IT are also integral parts of the offer. At the end of the 2 years there is a final examination, which is centrally accepted and assessed worldwide. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is valid for admission to most universities worldwide.

Upon graduation, college graduates can apply for one of the Shelby Davis Scholarships , which offer undergraduate programs at top US universities such as Princeton University , Brown University , Columbia University , Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Harvard University , Dartmouth College, and Middlebury College get supported.
