The University of Yamanashi ( Japanese 山 梨 大学 , Yamanashi daigaku , English University of Yamanashi , short: Nashidai ( 梨 大 )) is a state university in Japan . The main campus is located in Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture .

classification

As the only nationally funded state university in Yamanashi Prefecture , it is cheaper than private universities and is therefore very popular with students. Therefore, of all students who apply to Yamanashi, only those who achieved the most points in the central examination , a high school- like final examination in grade 12, can enroll. The higher education system in Japan is very hierarchical, the requirements between state universities and private universities are very different. In addition, presence with up to 50% of the points is included in the final evaluation of the diploma. Some private and prefectural universities don't even require a thesis. For example, the nearby prefecturally financed Yamanashi Gakuin Daigaku, which specializes in sports .

Because of this hierarchy in higher education, opportunities for entry and later employment depend less on the thesis and subject area, but mostly on the name of the university on the diploma, often the graduates then completely change their orientation and are retrained in the company.

history

Yamanashi University was founded in 2002 through the merger of the two state universities. They were the (older) Yamanashi University (English Yamanashi University , founded in 1949) and the Yamanashi Medical School ( 山 梨 医科大学 , Yamanashi ika daigaku , founded in 1978).

The oldest origin of the university lies in the Kitenkan ( 徽 典 館 ), which was founded in 1795 by the Tokugawa Shogunate as a branch school of the Shōheizaka Institute ( 昌平 坂 学問 所 , Shōheizaka gakumon-jo in Edo ). In 1873 after the Meiji Restoration , it became the Kaichi School ( 開 智 学校 , Kaichi gakkō ) and then in 1875 the Prefecture Normal School Yamanashi ( 山 梨 県 師範学校 , Yamanashi-ken shihan gakkō ). In 1883 the school lost the Kitenkan's books in fire. In 1910 the school moved to today's Kofu campus (west). In 1943 she became the state normal school Yamanashi ( 山 梨 師範学校 , Yamanashi shihan gakkō ).

Another predecessor of the university was the Yamanashi Technical Center ( 山 梨 工業 専 門 学校 , Yamanashi kōgyō semmon gakkō ). It was founded in 1924 as the Yamanashi Higher Technical School ( 山 梨 高等 工業 学校 , Yamanashi kōtō kōgyō gakkō ) and had three departments (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering). Its former seat is now the Kofu campus (east). Later it added more departments (electrical communications, chemical engineering, etc.), and in 1944 it was renamed Yamanashi Technical Center. In 1947 the pilot founded the Research Institute for Fermentation (now Research Institute for Enology and Viticulture at the University of Yamanashi (Jap. 山梨大学大学院医学工学総合研究部附属ワイン科学研究センター, Eng. The Institute of Enology and Viticulture, University of Yamanashi ) ).

The normal school, the technical center and the normal youth school Yamanashi ( 山 梨 青年 師範学校 , Yamanashi his shihan gakkō , founded in 1921) were merged in 1949 to form the (older) Yamanashi University.
