Urban III. (* around 1120 in Milan ; † October 20, 1187 in Ferrara ), originally Uberto Crivelli , was Pope from November 25, 1185 until his death on October 20, 1187 .

As a member of a Milanese family, like most Lombards, he was in opposition to Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa . In 1168 he became archdeacon of Bourges and Milan; Bishop of Vercelli ; on January 9, 1185 also Archbishop of Milan . On December 17, 1182 he was by Pope Lucius III. admitted to the college of cardinals as cardinal . The titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso was assigned to him.

On November 25, 1185 he was in Verona as the successor to Pope Lucius III, who died on the same day . elected pope; he retained his office as Archbishop of Milan.

Efforts to come to an understanding with the emperor failed. At the wedding of Constance with the heir to the throne Heinrich VI. in Milan he was represented by two cardinals. When the city of Cremona revolted against the emperor, probably with the knowledge and approval of the Pope, it was subjugated by Barbarossa, who, with the support of the German clergy, openly blamed the Pope for the uprising.

When the Pope's sphere of influence was almost entirely limited to Verona - Henry VI. had subjugated almost all of Lombardy - directed Urban III. entered into conflict with worldly power and went on a journey to Venice to see the crusaders who gathered there .

He died in Ferrara on October 20, 1187, allegedly out of dismay at the conquest of Jerusalem by Sultan Saladin on October 2.
