Valaškovce is a military site and the name of a former municipality in Okres Humenné , eastern Slovakia . The congruent military training area is called Kamenica nad Cirochou (after the municipality of the same name ). Along with Lešť and Záhorie, Valaškovce is one of three military areas in Slovakia.
The area lies in the Vihorlat and covers 119.23 km². It is forested to 85 percent and with a height of 1076 m nm highest mountain in the Vihorlatgebirges which also Vihorlat is, is in the field. The former town center is 15 km east of the city of Humenné .
The former municipality (the Hungarian name used until 1918 was Pásztorhegy ) was founded around 1630 and mentioned for the first time in 1635. The residents of the community, who at that time had 49 houses, were evicted in 1937 and the community dissolved to make way for a military training area. The majority of the population settled in Nové Valaškovce, a district of Humenné . Finally, on February 1, 1952, the area was declared a military area, which includes the entire cadastral area of Valaškovce and parts of the cadastral areas of other 13 municipalities.
Only the church, a cemetery and a few gardens have been preserved from the former parish.
The military area is still in active use today and no closure is planned in the near future.
