Career

Collingridge was born in Oxfordshire , the youngest of five children to a Scottish mother and a half- Irish father. She grew up in Woking , Surrey . She studied geography at Hertford College, Oxford, where she earned a world-class Master of Arts , despite developing meningitis in her sophomore year , which caused near-fatal swelling of her brain . In Oxford she also met her partner Alan Watt.

Immediately after graduation, she started her career in television, first as a question checker on game shows such as Wheel of Fortune and Win, Lose or Draw and then for 14 months as a weather presenter at BBC Scotland . Since then she has worked as a producer and presenter on all five UK terrestrial television channels and on the BBC radio .

In 2000, she quit her television presenter job at Tonight with Trevor McDonald to write two biographies, one on James Cook , an 18th-century explorer , and one on the Celtic warrior queen Boudica . While doing research on James Cook, she discovered that she shared ancestry with the controversial Australian writer and illustrator George Collingridge , who in 1895 had explained the theory of a Portuguese discovery of Australia.

Collingridge has lived in Scotland since 1989 , where she lives with her partner and sons in a converted farmhouse on the shores of Castle Semple Loch near Lochwinnoch . She is currently writing her PhD at the University of Glasgow . She also works as a broadcaster for BBC Radio Scotlands Buried Treasure .
