history

The name Varenna first appeared in the history of Milan in 493. The deacon Grato of Monza mentioned the fishing village in a deed from 769.

At the time of the communes it was allied with Milan and was destroyed in 1126 by Como , the enemy of the latter . In 1169 it granted asylum to the survivors of the island of Comacina , which was destroyed along with the castle and churches of Como. They named the neighborhood where they settled Insula nova. It became the second name of the whole community that soon became the richest on Lake Como. The exodus of the Comacians and the helpfulness of the Varennesi are celebrated annually on St. John's Day. The well-known master craftsmen of Comacina are the descendants of these refugees.

As part of the Archdiocese of Milan, the Ambrosian rite is used in Varenna alongside the Roman rite .

traffic

Varenna is on the railway line from Milan to Sondrio and Tirano in Valtellina or to Chiavenna .

A car ferry connects Varenna with Cadenabbia and Menaggio on the west bank and with Bellagio . There are also boat connections to various other places on the lake.
