On February 15, the Besi Merah Putih (BMP) militia attacked Vatuvou and Guiço . Vatuvou became a ghost town . The inhabitants fled to Sare ( Ermera municipality ). Up to 6000 refugees gathered there alone and stayed until the INTERFET arrived in September 1999. Almost 2700 refugees from Vatuvou and Maubara gathered in March in Gariana, 375 with the Carmelite nuns in Lissadila.

The remains of about a dozen victims of the Liquiçá church massacre were recovered from Lake Maubara in 1999 by Australian naval divers. Members of pro-Indonesian militias and the Indonesian military sank the bodies in the lake.
