Vicente Cardinal Enrique y Tarancón (born May 14, 1907 in Burriana , Spain , † November 28, 1994 in Valencia ) was Archbishop of Toledo and Madrid .

Life

After years of studying philosophy and theology in Tortosa and Valencia, Enrique received the sacrament of ordination on November 1, 1929 . From 1929 to 1933 and 1938 to 1946 he worked as a parish chaplain in the diocese of Tortosa . Between 1933 and 1938 he worked as a pastor for the Catholic Action in the Archdiocese of Madrid .

On November 25, 1945, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Solsona . He received his episcopal ordination on March 24, 1946, the Bishop of Tortosa , Manuel Moll y Salord ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop and later archbishop of Madrid, Casimiro Morcillo González , and auxiliary bishop Juan Hervás y Benet from Valencia .

Enrique attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 . On April 12, 1964, Pope Paul VI appointed him . Archbishop of Oviedo , on January 30, 1969 Archbishop of Toledo . In the consistory on April 28 of the same year he accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Giovanni Crisostomo in the college of cardinals . On December 3, 1971, Cardinal Enrique became Archbishop of Madrid. In 1978 he took part as a cardinal with the right to vote in the August Conclave , which John Paul I elected, and two months later in the October Conclave , which John Paul II elected. From 1971 to 1981 he was chairman of the Spanish Bishops' Conference .

On April 12, 1983, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. On October 4, 1994, he received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Valencia . He died shortly afterwards on November 28, 1994 in Valencia and was buried in Madrid.
