Vido William Musso (born January 13, 1913 in Carrini, Sicily , † January 9, 1982 in Rancho Mirage , California ) was an American tenor saxophonist , clarinetist and band leader of swing and modern jazz .

Vido Musso became known through his work in the big bands of Benny Goodman , Gene Krupa , Tommy Dorsey , Harry James , Stan Kenton and Woody Herman .

Originally from Sicily, Musso came to the United States with his family in 1920 and grew up in Detroit . In 1930 he went to Los Angeles . His first instrument was the clarinet before he switched to the tenor saxophone. As early as 1930 his collaboration with Stan Kenton began , he also played in the orchestras of Teddy Wilson , with whom he accompanied Billie Holiday , among others . Musso worked with Benny Goodman from 1936 to 1938, with Gene Krupa in 1938 and Harry James 1940-41 . He then worked again for Goodman, then for Bunny Berigan and in 1942 for Woody Herman. In 1945 he played briefly with Tommy Dorsey and André Previn . He then founded his own formation, but was unsuccessful. The most significant phase of his career were the years he worked in the Stan Kenton Orchestra from 1945 to 1947, such as his participation in the title "Come Back to Sorrento" . He then worked as a freelance musician and arranger on the West Coast, in 1957 in Las Vegas . Under his own name, four titles were created for Savoy Records in 1946 and three titles for Fantasy Records in 1952 .
