action

Professor Karl Michaeli is a former star cellist and Grantler , as he stands in the book. After the death of his beloved wife Maria in 2014, the retired music professor lives alone in a three-room apartment in Vienna . To his displeasure, several foreign families are housed in his apartment building. The free-spirited apartment building owner Esther Polgar, who is also widowed, accommodates refugees in his home . These are a particular thorn in Karl's side.

Among the residents is 16-year-old Hamid, who attended a German school in Damascus and lost his family in the war in his homeland, Syria . After breaking into his apartment and having reservations about Hamid at first, Karl discovers his neighbor's musical talent and takes him under his wing. Karl is now trying to catch up on this musical support that he had missed from his own son Alexander, called "Sascha", with whom he has had no contact for years.

After breaking into his apartment, Karl Michaeli withdrew his original complaint against Hamid. When Hamid, whom Karl repeatedly calls "Syrian snot, " initially refuses to take cello lessons from him, he calls the police again . She questions his state of mind and then informs his son that Karl should be incapacitated. Then his son resumes contact with him and announces that guardianship to request and send it to the nursing home. Meanwhile, Esther Polgar asks her friend and lawyer Raimund Hinteregger to give Karl Michaeli a resignation because it poisons the climate in the house and keeps bringing the police into the house.

To be able to practice, Hamid steals an instrument from the music college. Hamid also has an eye on Yasemin, whose brother Aslan is not very enthusiastic about the relationship. In the event of an argument, the bridge of the stolen cello breaks. Karl tries to repair the instrument and discovers the sticker owned by the Vienna University of Music , although Hamid has claimed to have bought the instrument. Karl asks Hamid to bring the instrument back. Hamid is discovered and arrested. Karl asks Esther to help her lawyer Raimund Hinteregger represent Hamid. Karl meets his former student Schauer at the music university. Schauer tells the police that it was a mistake because Hamid is his student. Thereupon the advertisement of the Musikuni is withdrawn. Karl gives Hamid the cello of his son, who was not interested in this instrument.

When Hamid receives a deportation notice, Karl visits director Hermann Gruber and asks him to play for a place at the university. This would guarantee recognition as a refugee. After initial hesitation, he promises him a foreplay. Foreplay, in which Hamid, the Cello Concerto by Edward Elgar is the best that is in addition to Hamid's friends Yasemin, Geri and Aslan Karl's son Alexander in attendance. In the middle of the performance, Hamid suddenly breaks off and leaves the hall. Nonetheless, Hamid passes the exam. Attorney Hinteregger requests that the deportation be postponed.

reception

The Oberösterreichische Nachrichten described Vier Saiten as a “cinematic masterpiece with an overmaster named Otto Schenk”. The storyline has the right potential for platitude threshing.

The Tiroler Tageszeitung wrote that the secret of the success of the film, which has a broad impact and is backed by a deeply humanitarian message, is easily explained: "Schenk plays Schenk". And he was allowed to indulge in that love that was always his greatest - alongside that for his wife Renee -: the love of music. Certainly it is a kitsch-endangered story that develops in the episode, but it is told as a comedy - and would provide a lot of material for acting highlights. Marianne Mendt as the house owner, Friedrich von Thun as a slightly greasy lawyer, Erwin Steinhauer as the director of the conservatory with dirt and Lukas Resetarits as Sandler gave the film an original Viennese feel.

An average of 1.1 million viewers saw the film when it was first broadcast on ORF.
