Marianne Mendt (2016)

Marianne Mendt (* 29. September 1945 in Vienna as Marianne Krupicka ) is an Austrian singer and actress .

Life

As a child, Marianne Mendt received private lessons in classical singing and enjoyed six years of piano lessons. After graduating from business school, she worked for the detergent company Henkel for three years , but then followed her calling. After completing her vocal training and having passed the exam as a “performing artist”, she toured Europe with her band The Internationals as a singer and bassist.

In 1970 she returned to Vienna and was discovered by Gerhard Bronner . He wrote the text for the song Wie a Glock'n for her , which is considered to be the initial spark for Austropop and the Austrian “dialect wave”. The music for this came from Hans Salomon and was the theme tune of Bronner's satirical TV show "The Big Bell". The song was presented in the 10th episode of this program, broadcast on June 30, 1970 in the first program of the ORF . The album Wie a Glock'n, which Mendt released with Bronner and Salomon with the assistance of André Heller and Werner Schneyder in 1970, also features (jazz) classics such as Mercy, Mercy, Mercy; Spinning Wheel or the musical hit Aquarius , for which an "Austrian" text was written.

Wie a Glock'n was voted 8th of the “100 most important Austrian pop songs” by the pop culture magazine The Gap in 2020 in the AustroTOP ranking.

In 1971 she represented Austria in Dublin at the Eurovision Song Contest , but achieved only 16th and third from last place with her song Musik .

In 1972 Mendt released the long-playing record Gute Lieder sind wie Pistolen, which was produced by André Heller . In addition, Georg Danzer , Robert Opratko and Richard Oesterreicher were involved as lyricists and composers on this album .

After the birth of her daughter Anna, Mendt concentrated mainly on work in Vienna and increasingly played theater, including at the Vienna Raimund Theater and the Theater in der Josefstadt , and in feature films, but also continued to publish long-playing records and appeared as a singer in television programs in Germany and Austria. She achieved great fame in the years 1992 to 2000, especially in the role of 'Gitti Schimek' in the ORF television series Kaisermühlen Blues .

In 2000 Mendt released the album Friends and Prophets, on which she rearranged some of her early songs as duets with some of her early companions such as André Heller or Georg Danzer .
