history

The first quarter dollars were minted in 1796. After the front motif, a bust of Liberty , this type is called the "Draped Bust Quarter". The reverse shows an eagle. From 1804 to 1807 this type was minted again with a different representation of the eagle. The "Capped Bust Quarter" or "Liberty Cap Quarter" (1815–1838) shows a modified bust of Liberty with a Phrygian cap . The "Seated Liberty Quarter" (1838-1891) shows the Liberty in a sitting position, the "Barber Quarter" (1892-1916, named after Charles E. Barber , from whom the design comes) shows the head of the Liberty with a Phrygian cap and the “Standing Liberty Quarter” (1916–1930) shows a standing Liberty.

George Washington has always been featured on the front of the coin since 1932 . The eagle remained the motif on the back until 1998. Due to the rising price of silver , the previous composition of silver (6.25 g, 0.900 fine) was abandoned in 1965 and instead the coin was made from a copper core coated with copper nickel. In 1976 a commemorative quarter dollar coin was issued to mark the bicentenary of American independence . In the years 1999–2008, the " 50 State Quarters " program issued coins with motifs on the reverse five times a year. Each back shows a motif from one of the 50 US states . In 2009 it added expenses to the District of Columbia , Puerto Rico , Guam , American Samoa , the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands . From 2010 the coins of the “ America the Beautiful Quarters ” program will be issued. This program again takes into account all 50 states and 6 additional territories, and each represents a national park or other site of national importance (“National Site”). Five issues per year are planned, so the series will last until 2021.
