Vilkerath is a district of Overath in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Vilkerath is located in the Bergisches Land about 25 kilometers east of Cologne and a good 30 kilometers northeast of Bonn in the Aggertal .

history

Vilkerath is first mentioned in a document in 1250, the core of the place is the Untervilkerath residential area .

Today's local area was formed from the three originally independent residential areas Untervilkerath, Aggerhof and Steinhaus , which only grew together in the course of the 20th century to form a closed local area Vilkerath. The vacant lots to the Obervilkerath and Krombach residential areas are also increasingly closing.

In 1894 the first church was built, which was replaced by a larger new building in 1952. With the construction of the Siegburg – Olpe railway line from 1884, Untervilkerath received its own breakpoint, which was replaced after the First World War with the relocation of the track away from today's main road to Agger by the Vilkerath breakpoint to the east. This new breakpoint was closed again in 1960.

On January 23, 1961, a Bundeswehr Noratlas transport machine crashed between Vilkerath and Bengelshöhe . All four crew members were killed in the crash.

Vilkerath moated castle

In 1978 remains of the former water castle of Vilkerath were found during road construction work.

Mining

At Vilkerath, non-ferrous metal ores had been mined since the middle of the 19th century . Mention should be made of the mines Grube Rosalinde , Grube Rupertus and the Uhland mine, whose mine field was consolidated with the Bruno II mine .

traffic

The Kölner Straße, which was paved with the construction of the Köln-Olper Chaussee (construction period 1823 to 1834), runs through the village. Today it has been expanded to federal highway 55 . South of Vilkerath which runs A 4 to the next junction in Overath .

The Siegburg – Olpe railway runs from Cologne via Dieringhausen to Marienheide between the village and the Agger . The nearest regional train stations are in Overath and Engelskirchen . However, since numerous commuters travel to the greater Cologne area, consideration is being given to reactivating the regional train stop in Vilkerath.

Harvest parade

Every second weekend in October there is a three-day harvest festival in Vilkerath. The organizer is the Agricultural Casino , which has existed since 1872. The highlight of the festivities is the Sunday harvest parade, in which more than 500 participants take part. The harvest crown is accompanied on a horse-drawn cart by foot groups, music bands and historic tractors. On more than a dozen themed wagons, topics relating to rural life are imaginatively presented. Since 1950, a harvest couple has been chosen on the occasion of the harvest festival. Several thousand visitors from the region line the roadside during the parade.
