Volker Wahl (born June 10, 1943 in Steinbach-Hallenberg ) is a German archivist and historian .

Life

After training as an office machine mechanic, teacher and archivist, Wahl lives as a retired state archive director. D. in Weimar . After studying German and English at the University of Education in Potsdam , he passed a state examination as a teacher in 1966 and initially worked in school in Schmalkalden . From 1972 to 1974 he completed an external degree in archival science at the Humboldt University in Berlin , which he completed in 1974 with a diploma as archivist. In 1976 he received his doctorate in regional history and in 1987 his habilitation in cultural history on Jena as a city of art.

From 1969 to 2008 Wahl worked in the archive service; in Weimar he worked as a scientific archivist in the state archive from 1969 . From 1975 to 1986 he was university archivist in Jena , from 1986 to 1991 director of the Goethe and Schiller archive in Weimar and finally director of the Thuringian main state archive in Weimar from 1991 to 2008.

Since 1994 Wahl exercised a part-time teaching activity for archival studies and historical auxiliary sciences as a private lecturer , since 2001 as an adjunct professor at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Wahl was chairman of the Thuringian Archives Association from 1990 to 1998 and was on the board of the VdA - Association of German Archivists from 1997 to 2005 . V. as deputy chairman at the side of Norbert Reimann , from 2001 as chairman. He is a founding member of the Historical Commission for Thuringia (1991; member of the board from 2002 to 2008) and a full member of the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt , humanities class (since 1994). From 1992 to 2017 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Karl May Foundation in Radebeul and from 1995 to 2012 of the board of trustees of the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation .
