Vougeot wine region

1994 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

The Vougeot appellation ( appellation d'Origine Contrôlée since December 8, 1936) has four Premier Cru sites (Les Crâs, Le Clos Blanc, Les Petits Vougeots, Clos de la Perrière; total area 11.68 ha) and one Grand -Cru location (Clos de Vougeot; total area 50.97 ha). Mainly red wines from the Pinot Noir grape variety are grown , as well as white wine from the approved Chardonnay grape variety . The yield of red wine is limited to 50–58 hectoliters / hectare (Premier Cru: 48–56 hectoliters / hectare). The average harvest (excluding Grand Cru) is around 345 hl / year (including 272 hl Premier Cru) red wine and around 152 hl / year (including 124 hl Premier Cru).

The minimum alcohol content is 10.5% (Premier Cru: 11%, Grand Cru: 11.5%) for the red wine and 11% (Premier Cru: 11.5%) for the white wine. In the case of artificial enrichment with dry sugar ( chaptalization ), a maximum alcohol content is set at 13.5% (Premier Cru: 14%, Grand Cru: 14.5%).

The only Grand Cru location in Vougeot is also one of the most famous wine locations in France: the Clos de Vougeot . The property of this 50.97 hectare site is shared by around 80 wineries (owners). Each owner produces his own wine independently. 42–49 hl of wine can be produced per hectare, the total annual production is around 1587 hl (211,600 bottles) of Grand Cru . The Clos de Vougeot vineyard is located between Musigny in the north and the Grand-Echezeaux in the south. It has a gradient of 3 to 4% and is terraced at an altitude of 240 and 265 m above sea level. There is a continental climate with warm and thunderstorm summers, in winter it is cold. In general, the climate of the Côte de Nuits is particularly warm and dry. The vineyards are protected from the greatest cold and heavy rain on the west side with the foothills of the Morvan. The Morvan belongs to the Massif Central and is also known as the Black Mountains. The Château de Vougeot, a former abbey, and its enclosed, walled vineyard ("Clos") can be described as the oldest viticulture research institute in the world.
