Tiesňavy bottleneck

The Vrátna Valley (Slov. Vrátna dolina ) is a mountain valley in the Little Fatra in Slovakia .

Location and description

The Vrátna Valley is located in the Krivaňská Fatra - the northeastern part of the Little Fatra - south of the Terchová municipality . It is bounded in the east and south by the main ridge, in the north and west by secondary ridges of the mountains. Two of these side ridges form a deeply cut bottleneck bordered by limestone cliffs ( Tiesňavy ) at the exit of the valley through which the Varínka stream flows .

Shortly above this gorge, the valley divides into two parts, separated from the Grúň mountain ; to the south runs the valley Stará dolina (German about "Old Valley"), to the east the valley Nová dolina (about "New Valley"). In the latter is Štefanová , the only closed settlement in the Vrátna Valley.

tourism

The valley is one of the most scenic regions in Slovakia and is characterized by tourism. There are several ski lifts and, since March 2006, a cable car to the Snilovské sedlo saddle . A number of marked hiking trails lead to the surrounding peaks (including Veľký Kriváň , Chleb, Veľký Rozsutec , Stoh , Sokolie , Boboty ).
